Our Autumn 1 2019 topic is...

Literacy

Awaiting content!

Phonics and Reading Schemes

In Key Stage One, we use the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme to learn Phonics. In Year 2, the focus is on learning to spell words following rules. We are learning 'Phase 6'.

Our reading scheme is 'Oxford Reading Scheme'.

Mathematics

In Maths this half term, we are going to be focusing on number, place value, addition and subtraction.  We will be learning the value of tens and ones, ordering and comparing numbers and counting in multiples of 2, 3, 5 and 10. We will be learning lots of different methods of addition and subtraction. We will be deepening our understanding of these skills with lots of 'Maths talk' where we will be proving, explaining and making links.

  History

In our History lessons this half term, we are going to be learning all about castles in Medieval times. We will be comparing castles to our own homes, finding out about 'Motte and Bailey castles' and how castles defended themselves. We will be finding out about a Knight's armour, the importance and impact of different jobs in a castle and learning about Medieval methods of punishment!

Geography

In Geography we will be studying where castles were built and finding out the reasons why they were built there. We will be developing our geographical vocabulary and using it in our explanations. We will be making comparisons between Medieval and modern maps of Europe and identifying similarities and differences.

 P.E

PE will take place every Monday afternoon.

Please ensure all items of PE kit is clearly labelled and in school. They will remain in school until half term. Please ensure you have removed any earrings on this day as children will not be able to do PE with earrings in and that long hair is tied back. Please note that adults in school are not allowed to remove the earrings and plasters over earrings are not permitted.

Weather permitted the majority of the lessons will be outside so please provide warm clothing, e.g. leggings or tracksuit bottoms.

Reading Challenge

This half term's reading challenge is __ reads! If you read your home reading book __ times and your parents / carers sign your record to say you have done so, you will be able to go to the special reading treat at the end of the half term. Keep reading!

Spellings

Here are some words that all children need to be able to read and spell correctly by the end of Year 2. Supporting your child with learning these at home will really help them. If you would like any support or ideas about how you can help your child more, please ask Mrs McArdle or Miss Fairclough.

 Class Dojo

It is fantastic that most of our parents are all connected with Class Dojo to see how your child is getting on with earning their points and checking in with the Class Story.

We regularly use the messaging aspect of Dojo for communication so please look out for any messages and feel free to send either of us any messages or ask any questions.

Please note that it can take up to two working days for staff to reply to messages on Dojo. Messages will not be read or replied to during weeknights between 6pm - 8am or at any time during the weekend.
